It provides memory-hard computing and fast verification and is striving to be ASIC resistant by demanding a significant amount of memory. As is stated in the whitepaper, it takes 512MB to evaluate, another 112 KB of memory and 4078 hashes to verify. This shows it requires memory over computation power.
