What is Sticky Password?

Sticky Password is a password manager. This means that it will store all of your passwords for you, securely, in one place. We live in a time where you really should not be using the same password for every website and app, but who has the time to remember twenty different passwords across who knows how many different sites. Or even worse, have them written down somewhere they can be easily lost of stolen. Having a note on your iPhone is not good either. So a password manager aims to tackle this problem.

Sticky Password is one of several password managers out there and they do a lot more than just store your passwords. In a nutshell, they are able to store your credit card information, store secure notes (more on this below), create a portable password manager on a usb drive or memory card, family or team sharing accounts and many more features I will go into in this review.

Downloading Sticky Password

In order yo create a Sticky Password account, you must first download the software. This initially put me off... what if I just wanted to try it out, its then a pain to uninstall. But after thinking about it for a moment, it makes a lot of sense, since the password manager is stored on my device, I have control over it. My passwords aren't on the Sticky Password servers. My passwords aren't online accessible from a browser. They are safe and secure on my device.

Once I downloaded the app and created my account, Sticky Password gave me a 30 day free trial of their premium service. This is a great chance to try out all the features to see if Sticky Password premium is for you.

Creating the account was simple, I just needed to provide an email address and then create myself a password. This password is very, very, very important! It is your master password and is used to access your entire password manager. It is the only password you need to remember. That is the point of these managers, you just remember one password and they store the rest. Make sure this password is strong, plenty of characters long and not easy to guess. Use symbols and the odd characters on the keyboard you never normally touch. Go for it, the wackier the better. Just so long as you remember it! This master password is not stored on Sticky Password's servers, they cannot help you if you forget it.

Browser Extensions

Once it is installed and you are up and running, you will be prompted to install the browser extensions. I installed my browser extension and this made using the web a lot more seamless than keep jumping back to an app for my passwords. The extension meant that the passwords I needed were right there, where I needed them. Sticky Password offer browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera.

Pricing & Plans

Sticky Password offer a free plan, which is brilliant! It lacks a few features, but the lots of people, the free plan will do just fine. It is also useful if you are new to password managers and don't want to make the commitment to paying for the service just yet. They also offer a premium plan, which includes a few extra features some people might require from a password manager. I'll go over these in a little bit.

The premium plan costs $29.99 for the year and each license sold includes a donation on their behalf that goes towards saving Manatees. Yes, you read that correctly. Manatees. The reason behind this is very clever in fact. Sticky Password is owned by Lamantine Software. Lamantine means Mantee in French. In their words: "Manatees are unaware of their vulnerability in shallow waters near human civilization, just like many Internet users who are unaware of how vulnerable their online data are." What more reason do you need than that?

Sticky Password Save The Manatees

You can also get your paws on a lifetime premium service, for the cost of $119.99. No automatic recurring billing, just a one time payment.

Features

Sticky Password offers lots of useful features. Some are in the free plan, others are part of the premium plan. The features below are included with both the free and premium plans:

  • Unlimited Password Storage. So go ahead, store everything! The more you move into your manager, the less your brain has to do. And if they are offering the storage free, why not take advantage of it.
  • Automatic Form Fills. Forms on the web can automatically be filled out if you wish, which is a huge time saver! No one wants to type their name, email address and contact details every time they order something online.
  • Password Generator. So a website asks for your password to be sixteen characters long. And contain three numbers. And six capital letters. And it cannot be a word from any dictionary. Oh and it wants some special characters too. Cue Sticky Password's password generator. Tell it what you want and it'll give you a killer password with everything you need.
  • Secure Digital Wallet. Whenever I pay for things online, I can very rarely be bothered to get up and find my credit card. Sticky Password has this covered too with their secure digital wallet. You can store all of your credit card numbers, expiry dates, ccv numbers and all that good stuff right inside your password manager.
  • Secure Notes. These are notes that are contained within your password manager, therefore can only be accessed by you or anyone who uses your manager. Store your wifi password here, or log in details you need for your bank. All the things that need to be safe, but might not necessarily count as just a username and password.
  • 2 Factor Authentication. This is very important. This means your manager has an extra layer of security besides just having a strong master password.
  • Biometric Authentication. This is an absolute must if you're using an app on a smart phone. It means you can unlock your manager with your fingerprint or face, depending on your device. Much faster than typing out a master password each time you want to use it.
  • USB Portable Manager. Now this is interesting. This allows you to make a portable copy of your manager and store it on a USB pen, flash drive or even an SD card. You can then plug this into any pc or laptop and have access to your own password manager on any machine. Take it to school, use it at work in a library, this is a very handy feature that more password managers should offer. Once again, no need to remember passwords. Just that one master password to unlock your manager. The only downside is, it is only available on windows. But that is definitely better than nothing!

Premium Features

These features are only available to premium customers.

  • Across-Device Sync. If you plan to use Sticky Password on just one device, such as your smart phone or laptop, then the free plan is perfect for you. However, if you require your password manager on your laptop, phone, tablet or anything else you have lying around, then you will want to upgrade to premium.
  • Cloud Backup. This allows you to backup all your passwords to the cloud, so if you should lose your device, your passwords are still accessible elsewhere.
  • Secure Password Sharing. This is a good option if you have multiple people that require access to the passwords, such as a team or a family. Different people can have different permissions and you can add and remove people easily.
  • Priority Support. Now this is valuable if you are new to the world of password managers and need a little extra help here and there.

Platforms & Apps

Sticky Password is available on both Android and iOS, so you can use it on your smart phone. The apps is free on both app stores. You can install it on both Windows and Mac, no mention of Linux yet though, which could be an issue for some users. Again, these are both free to download. Sticky Password also offer browser extensions, which I feel are a requirement when it comes to password managers. As I mentioned earlier, you can get extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera. Once you've installed whichever app or extension you need, either log in or create an account if you haven't already done so.

  • Mac
  • Firefox Browser Extension
  • Chrome Browser Extension
  • Opera Browser Extension
  • Safari Browser Extension
  • Internet Explorer Browser Extension

Support

As I said earlier, their priority support only comes with the premium service. The rest of us have an online email form through which we can contact them. Their support is excellent and they were very helpful to me when I reached out with a few questions about the service.

Overall

I was very pleased with the Sticky Password experience. There are far worse services out there for sure, and these guys have made it easy, intuitive and user friendly. All of which are a minimum requirement when dealing with such a messy topic as passwords. The generator makes life a lot easier and the ability to add secure notes, credit cards and all those other fun things make it a one stop shop for all the things you could ask for. And having just one password to remember, now that is a huge bonus. I like the apps and the extensions. I used it on my Mac with no trouble. The price for the paid service is good, if the things it offers are what you need, then it is a no-brainer.
